Schools Meals for Students

New! State of Texas Pandemic Food Benefits

Because of school closures from COVID-19, Texas received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide more than $1 billion in pandemic food benefits to families with children that have temporarily lost access to free or reduced-price school meals.

Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) provides eligible families with a one-time payment for each child who previously received free or reduced-price meals. P-EBT works the same way Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits do and will help families get the food they need during the current pandemic. P-EBT will be administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Texas Department of Agriculture and Texas Education Agency. To learn about eligibility and how to apply, visit the Pandemic-EBT webpage.

Summer Meal Programs

In Texas, more than 1 in 5 children struggle with hunger. When the school year ends, children often lose access to consistent, nutritious school meals. The Summer Meals Program ensures more Texas children have enough food for an active, healthy life.

The Summer Meals Program provides meals at no cost to children and teens 18 years old and younger in low-income areas.

Participating families do not have to apply register or provide identification. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds the Summer Meals Program – including the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and the Seamless Summer Option (SSO). The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) administers the Summer Meals Program in Texas.

School Meals for Students

During the spring with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, school districts and institutions of higher education throughout Hidalgo County (and across the world) adjusted to a new way of teaching and learning. With that came the need to provide for the nutritional needs of students as well. Many school districts continue to provide free breakfast and lunch meals to support the needs of students during this time.
